Abstract
Learning motivation is one of the essential factors influencing students’ academic achievement. One of the external factors presumed to enhance learning motivation is peer social support. Peer support, including emotional, informational, instrumental, appraisal, and companionship support, can encourage students to face academic challenges, increase self-confidence, and foster enthusiasm for learning. This study aimed to examine the effect of peer social support on students’ learning motivation among senior high school students in Purwosari District. This study employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The population consisted of 4,122 students from four senior high schools in Purwosari District. A total of 365 respondents were selected using the Slovin formula with a 5% margin of error and proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using the Peer Social Support Scale and the Learning Motivation Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality test, linearity test, and simple linear regression analysis. The results revealed that peer social support had a positive and significant effect on students’ learning motivation (R = 0.644, R² = 0.414, F = 256.970, p < 0.001). The regression equation (Y = 24.033 + 1.046X) indicates that higher peer social support is associated with higher learning motivation. Peer social support contributed 41.4% to students’ learning motivation, while the remaining 58.6% was influenced by other factors not examined in this study. These findings indicate that peer social support plays an important role in improving students’ learning motivation.
